The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) awarded Mindoro State University (MinSU) the Academic Partner in the Regional Textile Innovation Award during the 2025 National Textile Convention (TELACon) Textile Stakeholders Recognition and Fellowship Night held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), January 31, 2025.
With the theme “Weaving Circularity,” TELACon 2025 served as a platform to formally recognize the invaluable contributions of leaders and advocates who have significantly advanced the Philippine textile industry. The event gathered key stakeholders from various sectors, including design, manufacturing, academe, media, government, social enterprises, and weaving communities, to celebrate collaborative efforts and forward-thinking initiatives driving the industry's progress.
Ms. Zussette C. Aplaon, Associate Professor and leader of the Awati TI-KAPE Community Development Program, proudly accepted the award on behalf of the University. According to her, this recognition underscores MinSU’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the textile industry in Mindoro. She also emphasized that the University continues to support and lead efforts to empowering local indigenous textile communities through training programs and skills development.
“MinSU has been at the forefront of promoting and advancing indigenous weaving traditions of Mangyan communities, particularly the Ramit textile. The University’s dedication to preserving and innovating these cultural textiles is reflected in our continuous efforts in innovative research initiatives, impactful community extension programs, and strong partnerships with local communities and national collaborating agencies,” Ms. Aplaon said.
TELACon aims to accelerate the transition of the Philippine textile industry towards a self-reliant, regenerative model. The convention aligns with Proclamation No. 313, which declares January as Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month, furthering the growth of the local textile sector through innovation and sustainability.
