In line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month, Mindoro State University (MinSU), through its Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), conducted a fire drill across its campuses earlier today, March 27, in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
The activity aimed to equip students, faculty, and staff with essential knowledge and skills in responding to fire emergencies. Before the drill, BFP personnel oriented the participants on fire safety protocols, evacuation procedures, and the objectives of the simulation. They emphasized the importance of preparedness, quick response, and coordination during fire incidents.
Following the orientation, a fire drill simulation was conducted. At the sound of the emergency alarm, students, faculty, and staff promptly evacuated their respective buildings, following designated exit routes leading to the assembly points. The BFP team demonstrated proper fire extinguisher use, showing how to suppress small fires effectively. Student-volunteers from the university were given the opportunity to apply what they had learned by extinguishing a controlled fire under the guidance of BFP personnel.
In addition, a simulated rescue operation was also conducted, where responders assisted individuals acting as injured victims.
To further enhance the learning experience, firefighters showcased a simulated fire suppression using their fire truck. They demonstrated hose deployment, high-pressure water spraying, and coordinated teamwork in extinguishing a controlled fire scenario. This hands-on demonstration provided participants with a realistic understanding of fire response operations.
Mr. Melvin Aguba, Coordinator of the DRRMO at MinSU Main Campus, emphasized the importance of conducting fire drills to equip the MinSU community, especially the students, with the necessary knowledge and skills in responding to emergencies such as fires.
"This kind of exercise is essential in preparing our students and the entire MinSU community for disasters like fires. It ensures that they know what to do and are ready to respond effectively. Disasters can happen anytime, anywhere, so it is crucial that everyone is aware of the proper actions to take in such situations," he stated.
The exercise concluded with an evaluation by the BFP, highlighting areas of improvement and commending the university community for their cooperation.
