Mindoro State University (MinSU) continues to blaze the trail toward a more inclusive and equitable future as it hosted the Synergizing Gender Equality and Leadership: Workshop and Capability Building for Officials, Faculty, and Employees on December 2-3, 2024, at Tamaraw Beach Resort, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.
Spearheaded by MinSU’s Women, Gender, and Development (WGAD) unit, the two-day workshop aimed to enhance participants' understanding of gender equality and leadership while fostering camaraderie and collaboration among university stakeholders.
The workshop commenced with an inspiring message from Dr. Ciedelle P. Salazar, Officer-In-Charge and Vice President for Academic Affairs, who emphasized MinSU’s role as a safe and inclusive space.
"This gathering underscore our shared commitment to inclusivity, empowerment and transformative leadership. Gender equality and leadership, both are indispensable to progress and innovation. As leaders and faculty members, we are uniquely positioned to lead change in waiving these principles into the very fabric of our academic community." she emphasized.
She also noted the roles of educators in promoting gender equality in the community.
“As educators, our role extends beyond the classroom, it is our power to challenge biases, advocate to equitable opportunities and inspire the next generation of leaders. Through our leaderships, we model the behaviors and values that shape our student’s views on equality and inclusion,” Dr. Salazar added.
The workshop included sessions relative to GAD which provided participants with knowledge to advance gender equality in their respective roles. Atty. Veronica Goco-Chan, a women advocate and litigation lawyer served as a resource expert on the Magna Carta of Women and the Safe Spaces Act. Her discussions went beyond merely outlining the provisions of these laws; she contextualized their relevance in an academic and professional environment. For the Magna Carta of Women, Atty. Chan discussed the role of universities as catalysts for gender equality, highlighting how institutional policies and programs can align with the law’s principles to promote inclusivity and protect the rights of women in the workplace and classrooms.
Additionally, Ms. Maria Ellaine Kris Diomampo, Administrative Officer V of City Legal Department of Local Government Unit-Calapan City, further enriched the workshop with her session on GAD Planning and Budgeting. Her presentation guided participants on aligning and integrating gender-responsive budgeting into the university’s operations, ensuring that resources are strategically allocated to address gender-related challenges.
Aside from insightful discussions on GAD-related topics, the event also included activities fostering camaraderie and celebrated individualities. Participants showcased their energy and creativity during a Zumba Dance Contest that proved that fitness can be both fun and empowering.
Furthermore, the Search for Mr. and Ms. GAD added a touch of excitement, celebrating individuals who exemplify confidence and embody GAD advocacy. To cap off the event, a team-building activity strengthened bonds and camaraderie among the MinSU community.
As participants returned to their respective roles, they carried with them not only valuable insights but also a renewed dedication to championing gender equality and inclusivity within the university and beyond.
The said activity was formed part of MinSU’s commitment to the 18-Day Campaign against VAW, echoing the national call to eliminate violence and discrimination.
