Mindoro State University (MinSU) conducted an online orientation titled Futures Thinking: Redefining Mindoro State University’s F.U.T.U.R.E, November 11, 2024.

The acronym F.U.T.U.R.E stands for Foreseeing the direction of higher education institutions; Understanding current trends and challenges; Thinking critically and creatively; Uniting offices and disciplines; Reframing systems and projects; and Evaluating impacts on the community. It is a series of workshops focused on empowering the MinSU administration and stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills to properly integrate futures thinking into its structure, policies and directors.

The activity organized by Data Privacy Office headed by Atty. Sherlyn A. Layesa, Attorney IV was the Phase 1 of the series of events or workshops which aimed to introduce and orient MinSU’s concerned officials to futures thinking.

In her opening remarks, the Dr. Enya Marie D. Apostol, University President, quoted former US Pres. Robert F. Kennedy: “The future is not a gift; it is an achievement of those who plan for it”, as she emphasized the importance of foresight, innovation, and adaptability.

“We envision MinSU as a globally competitive, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable university. Together, we can shape the future of Mindoro State University,” she added.

Mr. Emmanuel De Guia, Director for Strategic Network and Partnership at the Philippine Futures Thinking Society (PhilFutures), highlighted the need for future-thinking strategies to ensure resource generation for the university.

Similarly, Dr. Ruperto S. Sangalang, a Senior Fellow at PhilFutures and former Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education, stressed the role of universities in serving society, which, in turn, sustains them. Dr. Marife M. Lacaba, a professor at Samar State University, introduced the Future Wheel, a tool for identifying potential consequences of different future scenarios.

“Future thinking prepares us not only for positive outcomes but also for worst-case scenarios,” she noted.

The said workshop was attended by the key officials and department/unit heads across the campuses of MinSU. Phase II of the activity titled Workshop on Framing the Futures and Value Creation is set to conduct in the first quarter of 2025.
