A Journey Anchored in Resilience and Faith

At 23 years old, Kathleen Kaye Evangelista Abueva of Proper Bansud, Oriental Mindoro has emerged as one of Mindoro State University’s newest sources of pride. A graduate of the BS Fisheries program of MinSU–Bongabong Campus (Class of 2024), Abueva earned a remarkable Top 4 ranking in the October 2025 Fisheries Professional Licensure Examination, bringing honor and inspiration to the entire MinSU community.

Choosing Fisheries: A Path Born from Circumstance and Passion

Kathleen’s entry into the world of fisheries was not part of her original plan. The 2020 pandemic forced her to choose a degree close to home due to financial and safety constraints. Between Agriculture and Fisheries—then offered at MinSCAT—her heart leaned toward marine science and the conservation of aquatic resources.

“Mas malapit ang puso ko sa dagat at sa pag-conserve ng aquatic resources, kaya Fisheries ang pinili ko.”

This decision would become one of the most defining choices of her life.

College Life During the Pandemic

Kathleen’s college years were shaped heavily by the disruptions of COVID-19. Two years of online learning, frequent power interruptions, and poor internet connectivity made the experience emotionally and academically challenging.

Despite the limitations, the Institute of Fisheries ensured students regained practical exposure once conditions improved. Fieldwork and on-the-job training later became some of Kathleen’s most treasured college memories—moments that strengthened teamwork and deepened class camaraderie.

“Field work and OJT were the best parts because that’s where teamwork and deeper connections were formed.”

College also helped her face one of her biggest struggles: anxiety. Over time, she learned to speak confidently and engage in class discussions, proving that growth often happens in the most unexpected ways.

Guided by Resilience and Faith

Throughout her academic journey, Kathleen carried one guiding principle: resilience.

She embraced challenges, allowed herself to pause and cry when needed, and then pushed forward with renewed strength.

“Iiiyak ko sya tapos laban ulit. Malaki ang tulong ng faith ko sa Panginoon—because of Him, I learned to be resilient.”

From Graduate to Topnotcher

During college, Kathleen kept her goals simple: to graduate, pass the board exam, and help her parents. Achieving Latin honors and securing a spot in the Top 10 were blessings she never expected.

To prepare for the board exam, she carefully chose a review center with proven effectiveness. This became a huge factor in strengthening her preparation and boosting her confidence.

“Hindi ko inexpect na mapasama sa Top 10. Hindi madaling makapasok.”

Passing the board exam, she believes, will open more opportunities for her despite the continued challenges of job hunting.

How MinSU Helped Shape Her Success

Kathleen expresses deep gratitude to Mindoro State University for its role in easing financial burdens and providing accessible, quality education. She also became a beneficiary of the Tulong Dunong Program, which greatly supported her daily academic needs.

She extends her heartfelt appreciation to the faculty of the Institute of Fisheries—for their mentorship, patience, and guidance both during and after college.

Next Steps: A Heart Set on Service

With her licensure behind her, Kathleen’s immediate plan is to find a job so she can support her family, especially with her parents’ medical needs. For her, success is most meaningful when shared with the people who helped her along the way.

Message to Students and Future Board Takers

To those still working toward graduation or preparing for their own licensure journey, Kathleen offers an inspiring message:

“Continue dreaming and hoping for the best. Madadapa at mapapagod tayo, pero kung kakapit tayo sa pangarap natin, babangon at babangon tayo. Malakas ang power ng prayers—I've witnessed it many times. And always thank God for every accomplishment, even the small ones.”

A Source of Pride for MinSU

Kathleen Kaye Abueva’s achievement stands as a reminder of MinSU’s commitment to academic quality and accessible education. Her story—rooted in humility, resilience, and grace—continues to inspire future fisheries professionals and the entire MinSU community.
