From Leaves to Innovation: MinSU, DOST to launch Natural Textile Innovation Hub in Bongabong Campus

What was once considered farm waste is now becoming a source of innovation!

Mindoro State University (MinSU), DOST-PTRI, and DOST-MIMAROPA signed a Memorandum of Agreement on November 27, 2025, to establish the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH), which will transform pineapple leaves and banana pseudostems into sustainable textile materials. The hub will be housed in MinSU Bongabong Campus, Brgy. Labasan, Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro.

Part of FRONTIER: Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Region, the project empowers local farmers, researchers, and industry stakeholders while promoting eco-friendly textile development. The project is funded by DOST-PTRI under the FRONTIER initiative, with the support and assistance of DOST-MIMAROPA.

MinSU committed to providing the necessary manpower, facilities, and local support to ensure the effective implementation and operation of the hub. The University also pledged to make available the physical infrastructure needed to house equipment, accessories, and other resources essential for NTFIH’s activities, demonstrating its full cooperation to support the project’s success.

The MOA signing was attended by Engr. Zaldie Gawad of DOST-MIMAROPA; MinSU leaders including Dr. Enya Marie Apostol, University President, Mr. Leonel Mendoza OIC-Vice President for Research, Innovation, Technology and Extension; Project RaMIT leader namely, Ms. Catherine M. Campo; Ms. Zussette C. Aplaon, Focal Person and Dr. Polemer M. Cuarto, Director for Research and Publication Services.

The establishment of the hub positions Oriental Mindoro and the MIMAROPA Region as a model for sustainable textile innovation, transforming local resources into new opportunities for economic growth and community development.
