To help address child illiteracy, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)–MIMAROPA trained MinSU education students as tutors under the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.
The five-day Capacity Building Activity for Tutors and Youth Development Workers, held from April 20 to 24, 2026, is organized by the DSWD MIMAROPA Regional Office. It seeks to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively facilitate learning sessions for children and engage parents in supporting their children’s reading development.
A total of 111 students from the College of Teacher Education gathered together to hone their skills and gain new knowledge on handling tutoring sessions particularly to incoming Grade 2 students identified by the Department of Education (DepEd) as “low emerging readers,” or those struggling with reading.
Prior to the program, participants were assigned specific roles. Tutors are trained to directly facilitate reading sessions with learners, while Youth Development Workers (YDW) focus on guiding parents, equipping them with strategies to support their children’s literacy at home.
As part of the training, participants are required to conduct a return demonstration, where they will apply what they have learned through a simulated tutoring session. This allows them to practice their skills in a structured setting before engaging in actual community-based tutoring.
Following the training, participants may take part in real tutoring sessions under Tara, Basa! program, extending their learning beyond the classroom and into communities in need.
