Stronger IP capabilities position MinSU to transform more research into community solutions

From research to real-world impact, MinSU strengthens its capacity to protect innovations and bring them closer to the communities they serve

Research only creates impact when it reaches the people who need it most. To help make that happen, Mindoro State University (MinSU) strengthened the capabilities of its Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) through a four-day intellectual property capacity-building training conducted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) in Taguig City from June 15-18, 2026.

The training equipped MinSU's ITSO personnel with advanced knowledge in intellectual property protection, prior art search, intellectual property management, and technology transfer and commercialization—essential competencies for helping faculty, researchers, and students protect their innovations and bring them beyond the laboratory.

By strengthening its intellectual property management system, MinSU enhances its ability to convert research outputs into technologies, products, and services that can benefit communities, industries, and local economies. It also ensures that innovations developed by the University are properly protected, enabling inventors to secure recognition while creating greater opportunities for collaboration, technology transfer, and commercialization.

Representing the University were Engr. Randy A. Joco, Director of Innovation; Engr. Fernando Paralejas, ITSO Manager; Mr. Reynaldo Manalo and Mr. Phil Genon, ITSO Technical Experts; Ms. Stella Marie Apostol, Administrative Staff; Ms. Judy De Guzman, Technology Transfer Coordinator; and Mr. James Gullion, TBI Portfolio Officer.

The capability-building program forms part of IPOPHL's continuing efforts to strengthen Innovation and Technology Support Offices in higher education institutions, ensuring they can effectively guide researchers in protecting intellectual property and maximizing the value of their innovations.

For MinSU, the training represents more than professional development. It strengthens the University's capacity to ensure that innovative ideas do not stop at research publications but become protected technologies and practical solutions that improve lives, support regional development, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
