LGU Victoria Collabs with MinSU to Strengthen Community Resilience

The LGU of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, in partnership with Mindoro State University, held a three-day training for Barangay Canaan public duty bearers on ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, October 29-31, 2024.

Geared toward building community resilience and promoting climate change adaptation, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, in collaboration with Mindoro State University (MinSU), conducted a three-day Capacity Development Training on Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation for Brgy. Canaan communities, held at Barangay Canaan, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, October 29 - 31, 2024.

The training was attended by public duty bearers from Barangay Canaan, including barangay officials, Barangay Lupon members, barangay health workers (BHWs), as well as representatives from non-government organizations and staff from MDRRMO, all were committed to strengthen their community’s preparedness for natural hazards and climate impacts.

MinSU faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Environmental Science served as resource speakers. They discussed topics including The Philippine DRRM System, Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services, Environmental Degradation and Disaster Risk, Nature-Based Solutions for Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation, Climate Change Science, GIS for Land Use Planning, Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory, among others.

Also part of the training was the tree-growing activity, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation in reducing disaster risks and supporting climate adaptation.

The training emphasized practical, eco-based disaster management strategies and strengthened local planning to make communities more resilient to climate impacts. According to the participants, they gained valuable knowledge and a renewed commitment to incorporate eco-friendly strategies in local disaster preparedness.

This partnership between MinSU and LGU Victoria represents a strong step forward in building a safer, more sustainable community.
