“Nagkaroon kami ng more knowledge about sa mga batas na tumatalakay sa aming mga kababaihan. Ngayon, mas alam na namin kung ano ang aming mga karapatan at mga hakbang na dapat gawin kung may ganitong pangyayari. Kami po ay mas na-empowered lalo na at ang aming asosasyon ay binubuo ng mostly ay women.”

This was how Rochelle Martinez, president of the Dao Waterlily Association, described the impact of a Women Empowerment Program conducted by Mindoro State University (MinSU) through its Women, Gender and Development (WGAD) office on March 23, 2026.

The community engagement activity, held in Barangay Dao, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro brought together members of the association - most of whom are women - for a learning session focused on legal awareness and gender sensitivity. The initiative aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge on laws protecting women and to strengthen their confidence in addressing gender-based issues.

Among the topics discussed were the Safe Spaces Act, commonly known as the Bawal Bastos Law, and the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act. Facilitators from MinSU explained key provisions of these laws, including the rights of women in public and workplace settings, as well as the proper steps to take in cases of harassment and abuse.

The session also highlighted the broader concept of women empowerment, emphasizing the role of women in community development and decision-making. Participants were encouraged to assert their rights, support one another, and actively contribute to building safer and more inclusive spaces.

For members of the Dao Waterlily Association, the program served not only as an educational opportunity but also as a platform for shared experiences and collective reflection. Many expressed appreciation for the clarity of the discussions and the relevance of the topics to their daily lives.

As a gesture of support, the university distributed simple tokens such as basins and detergent, practical items that also symbolize MinSU’s continued connection with the community.

The initiative forms part of MinSU’s ongoing extension efforts in line with National Women’s Month, reinforcing its commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering grassroots organizations across Oriental Mindoro. (jdtdc)
