More than 500 students, mostly young women, gathered at Mindoro State University (MinSU)–Victoria Campus on March 19, 2026, for the first leg of CYBERCON 2026, a regional cybersecurity conference led by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) MIMAROPA in collaboration with Women in Security Alliance Philippines (WiSAP) and hosted by Mindoro State University.

Carrying the theme “Women Breaking Stereotypes and Building Futures in Cybersecurity,” the activity underscored the need to empower women to take active roles in the rapidly evolving digital landscape while strengthening cybersecurity awareness across the region.

The conference convened experts, government partners, and students to tackle pressing concerns on cyber threats, digital safety, data privacy, and career opportunities in the cybersecurity sector. Participants gained practical knowledge on protecting personal and organizational data and applying cybersecurity practices in their daily online activities.

DICT MIMAROPA Regional Director Emmy Lou Delfin encouraged more women to pursue careers in cybersecurity, highlighting the region’s vision of becoming a center of excellence in the field.

“Our dream for the MIMAROPA region is to become the center of excellence in cybersecurity. There may be moments when you feel the field is too technical or too complex, or even too male-dominated. But remember that every woman we honored today once stood exactly where you are now. And all of you can do the same,” Delfin said.

MinSU President Dr. Enya Marie D. Apostol emphasized the importance of representation and leadership among women in technology.

“To the young woman in this hall, your presence is an act of courage and a blueprint for the future. Do not wait for permission to lead,” Apostol said.

“The digital world is vast and it requires your voice, your precision, and your vision. Let us continue to break the barriers and build a safer and more equitable world,” she added.

The event was also graced by DICT Undersecretary Heherson Assidao, who underscored the importance of engaging the youth in building a secure digital future.

“Through this CyberCon, we hope to inspire and empower more young women to explore opportunities in cybersecurity and the wider ICT industry. To our students joining today, the digital future needs your creativity, your ideas, and your leadership,” Assidao said.

Through a series of talks, interactive discussions, and open forums, participants explored opportunities in information and communications technology (ICT), particularly in cybersecurity, while learning how to contribute to a safe, inclusive, and resilient digital Philippines.

Students were also introduced to the eGovPH App, the government’s official digital platform that enables citizens to access services, report concerns, and stay informed online.

Organizers said CYBERCON 2026 aims to go beyond awareness by serving as a platform to empower young women, promote cybersecurity careers, and encourage responsible digital practices in communities. (jdtdc)
