MinSU, PCA finish needs assessment in Victoria to strengthen coconut sector
The Mindoro State University (MinSU), in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), has successfully completed a comprehensive needs assessment in selected barangays of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro as part of efforts to strengthen the local coconut industry and improve farmer livelihoods.
The activity, conducted under the Coconut Seedling Production Project, covered barangays Alcate on April 30, 2026; Bagong Silang and Ordovilla on May 7, 2026; and Concepcion and San Cristobal on May 8, 2026.
Ms. Elisa M. Agoncillo, Director for Extension said the initiative aimed to gather baseline data on existing coconut farms, production gaps, and resource needs directly from farmer-beneficiaries.
She emphasized that the assessment is crucial in ensuring that university-led interventions are aligned with actual conditions on the ground, allowing for more targeted and responsive development programs.
The data gathered will serve as the basis for the distribution of coconut seedlings and the formulation of interventions designed to improve productivity and sustainability in the province’s coconut sector.
Ms. Agoncillo noted that the collaboration between MinSU and PCA reflects ongoing efforts to further strengthen the coconut industry in Oriental Mindoro, where coconut farming remains a major source of income for rural households.
Results of the assessment are expected to guide the next phase of project implementation, particularly in improving access to quality planting materials and providing technical support to coconut farmers in identified communities. (jdtdc)
