Shaping Tomorrow: MinSU and Global Experts Collaborate for the Future of Higher Education

Mindoro State University held an international workshop to explore emerging trends in higher education and strengthen global collaborations, featuring expert insights from Malaysia University of Science and Technology.

To strengthen its global perspective on the future of higher education, Mindoro State University (MinSU) hosted an international workshop entitled The Future of Higher Education: A Workshop for MinSU’s Trajectory and Strategic Approach held at the University Auditorium, MinSU Main Campus, Alcate, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, September 20, 2024. The event, organized by the Office of External Linkages and International Affairs and Office of the University President, aimed to explore emerging trends and potential collaborations to ensure MinSU’s continued relevance and effectiveness in delivering quality education.


Atty. Sherlyn A. Layesa, Officer-in-Charge and Attorney IV of the university on behalf of the University President Dr. Enya Marie D. Apostol warmly welcomed the guests and participants. In her opening message, she emphasized the need for preparation amidst the uncertainties of the future. “We are never ready, only prepared. The future is something we cannot predict, but we can influence it through the actions we take today,” she said.


She also expressed confidence that with the guidance of resource experts and international partners, MinSU would be well-prepared to navigate the changing landscape of higher education, both locally and globally.


The workshop featured renowned academic leader, Prof. Dr. Premkumar Rajagopal, President of Malaysia University of Science and Technology, as the resource expert. Prof. Dr. Rajagopal shared valuable insights on the future of higher education, highlighting trends driven by technological advancements, innovative teaching and learning models, globalization and changing societal needs and the role of higher education leaders.


Following his presentation was an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with the resource expert and delve deeper into the challenges and opportunities presented by the future of education.


One of the key highlights of the event was the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking a significant milestone in MinSU’s efforts to expand its international network. The MOA formalized a collaboration between MinSU, Times Global Education Ltd., and Malaysia University of Science and Technology. Representing MinSU in the MOU signing were Atty. Layesa, Dr. Elvi C. Escarez, Calapan City Campus Executive Director, and Dr. Salcedo A. Tanguid Jr., Dean of the College of Criminal Justice and Education. Times Global Education Ltd. was represented by its President and Founder, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ben Lee, and Executive Director Ms. Lee Siew Shyan. Malaysia University was represented by Prof. Dr. Rajagopal. This agreement symbolizes a strengthened partnership aimed at fostering international linkages and collaborations.


In a message delivered by Dr. Jerrel S. Reyes, Chairperson for External Linkages and International Affairs, Dr. Apostol highlighted the need for MinSU to adapt to the global trends shaping higher education. “The future of higher education is one of boundless possibilities. Our friends and mentors from Malaysia University of Science and Technology and Times Global Education Ltd. are here to help us explore these possibilities, enabling us to think globally while acting locally,” she said.


Dr. Apostol further noted that the globalization and demands of the global job market are reshaping educational institutions. “We must cultivate international partnerships, encourage student mobility, and promote intercultural understanding. Our students need to be equipped with the skills to thrive in a competitive and ever-evolving world,” she remarked.


As she concluded her message, Dr. Apostol encouraged the MinSU community to actively participate in the discussions and contribute their ideas. “Together, we can shape the future of Mindoro State University and ensure that it continues to be a driving force for positive change in our community and beyond,” she stated, inspiring participants to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.


Meanwhile, Dr. Reyes, in his closing remarks emphasized the crucial role of strategic partnerships in shaping the future of MinSU. He emphasized that MinSU’s success hinges on cultivating meaningful collaborations with both local and international institutions.


“As we align our vision with the demands of the global education landscape, it is imperative that we cultivate partnerships that drive innovation and provide opportunities for our students and faculty to thrive,” Dr. Reyes stated. He also called on all participants to actively engage in expanding MinSU’s reach, positioning the university as a leader in academic excellence and community engagement. This collective effort, according to Dr. Reyes, will propel the university toward a future filled with transformative opportunities for growth.


The workshop was attended by key university officials, staff, faculty members, and selected students all united in their goal to ensure that MinSU continues to evolve as a center of excellence in higher education, both locally and globally.
