The Department of Science and Technology-MIMAROPA officially kicked off this year’s Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) at Calapan Covention Center, Calapan City on May 7, 2024. Co-hosted by the Mindoro State University, its theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa matatag, maginhawa at panatag na kinabukasan” aims to bring S & T initiatives and products closer to people for better appreciation and utilization as well as to enhance the participation of industry partners and other stakeholders.
The weeklong celebration, from May 7 – 9, 2024, is packed with engaging activities, including exhibits, technology forums, contests, project visits, and presentations on the latest technological breakthroughs by DOST that play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development in the country.
DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. graced the event along with Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay, DOST MIMAROPA Regional Director. They were also joined by Gov. Humerlito ‘Bonz’ Dolor, Oriental Administrator Dr. Hubbert Christopher A. Dolor, City Mayor Malou F. Morillo, and other LGU representatives who supported the event.
During the welcome remarks, Dr. Abilay highlighted the roles of science, technology and innovations in changing and transforming the quality of lives. She also shared some successful stories of innovations, stating DOST’s commitment to inclusive development through their endeavors.
Meanwhile, Gov. Dolor pledged his support along with other local chief executives to become partners and utilize the technologies being developed by young scientists.
Meanwhile, in his keynote address, Secretary Solidum emphasized the importance of RSTW celebration as it paves government programs, services, technologies, and products closer to stakeholders. He also highlighted the crucial role of universities and colleges, be it public and private in economic development of the country.
“The crucial role of the academe today should that you must participate, you must assist, you must collaborate in the economic development of your local government,” stated Dr. Solidum.
As he ended his message, he quoted this year’s theme “Sa siyensya, teknolohiya at inobasyon, tiyak ang buhay natin ay matatag, masagana at panatag.”
Engr. Mabborang likewise encouraged the attendees to foster learning, collaboration and network while participating in this event.
Moreover, as co-host of the event, Dr. Christian Anthony C. Agutaya, MinSU OIC-University President reaffirmed its commitment to promote science, technology, and innovation in the university.
“At MinSU, we have always been staunch advocates, championing the promotion of S&T innovation. Through our commitment to educational and research excellence, we foster a new generation of innovators and intellectual trailblazers who will revolutionize knowledge and bring about transformative change,” he expressed.
Also, one of the highlights of the opening of RSTW was the DOST MIMAROPA’s turnover of Mobile Food on the road innovation and processing (Food trIP), processing plant on wheels with different processing auxiliaries to the Province of Oriental Mindoro.
Participating in this significant event were all State Colleges and Universities across the MIMAROPA Region, including Occidental Mindoro State College, Marinduque State College, Romblon State University, and Western Philippines University as well as exhibitors, students, farmers and fisherfolk, and champions of S&T.
