Mindoro State University (MinSU) participated in the CALABARZON Coffee Expo 2024, held from August 9 to 11, 2024 at Fora Filinvest Mall in Tagaytay City. The event brought together coffee enthusiasts, experts, and industry stakeholders to celebrate and promote the region's rich coffee heritage.
MinSU’s Awati TI-KAPE Project Team was invited by Cavite State University’s (CavSU) National Coffee Research Development and Extension Center (NCRDEC) to showcase the heirloom coffee of the Hanunuo Mangyan, the project’s adopted indigenous community from Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. This initiative is part of MinSU's ongoing commitment to support and uplift the Hanunuo Mangyan through sustainable development projects.
The expo provided a platform to introduce the unique flavors and rich cultural heritage of Hanunuo Mangyan coffee to a wider audience. MinSU set up a booth where visitors could learn about the traditional brewing methods and the story behind the heirloom coffee. It was manned by members of Awati TI-KAPE Team along with Nayhan Using, a Hanunuo Coffee farmer representative from Mansalay.
The official launch of the event was marked by a ceremonial coffee toast, led by Usec. Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero, DA Undersecretary for High Value Crops Development Program. Joining her were Dr. Hernando D. Robles, CavSU President, Engr. Gerry M. Castillo, NCRDEC Director, Dr. Christian Anthony C. Agutaya, Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension of MinSU, Ms. Zussette C. Aplaon, Awati TI-KAPE Program Leader, and Ms. Jojie Pantoja, CEO of Coffee for Peace.
The Awati TI-KAPE program, initiated by the MinSU Bongabong Campus Research and Development Program in collaboration with the Local Government of Mansalay, aims to create tangible improvements in the lives of Mangyan coffee farmers.
