In line with the implementation of the Tara, Basa! Program - a nationwide literacy initiative of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) - a five-day capacity-building training was conducted by DSWD MIMAROPA from May 14 to 18, 2025.
The training aimed to equip student tutors and youth development workers with the necessary skills to effectively engage young learners.
The activity stemmed from the partnership between DSWD and Mindoro State University (MinSU), formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on April 10, 2025.
Held initially at the MinSU Calapan Campus Activity Center and continued at Vencio’s Garden Hotel, the training brought together 93 student volunteers. Most of the participants came from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) of MinSU–Main Campus and MinSU–Calapan City Campus, with additional volunteers from the College of Arts and Sciences. The training was made possible through the strong support of the CTE faculty and the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS).
The actual tutoring and youth development sessions under the Tara, Basa! Program will run from May 22 to June 14, 2025, and will be implemented in the municipality of Baco. Baco Community College also joins MinSU in implementing the Tara, Basa! Program, with both institutions working collaboratively to improve literacy and provide academic support to the children and youth beneficiaries in the community.
